PCOS & PCOD

Understanding Polycystic Ovary Syndrome, its diagnosis and the Ayurvedic approach to women's reproductive wellness.

Women's Reproductive Health

Polycystic Ovary Syndrome — PCOS / PCOD

Polycystic Ovary Syndrome is a relatively common endocrine disorder affecting women of reproductive age. It can be associated with ovulation difficulties, hormonal imbalance and fertility concerns.

PCOS can involve insulin resistance and compensatory hyperinsulinemia, which may have effects on multiple organ systems. It can be associated with alterations in serum lipids, anovulation, abnormal uterine bleeding and infertility.

According to Ayurveda, reproductive health is connected with the balance and nourishment of the body's tissues and systems. Hormonal balance, digestion, metabolism and overall well-being are considered when developing an individualized approach to women's health.

The Ayurvedic perspective focuses on understanding the individual's constitution, lifestyle, diet and underlying imbalances rather than approaching every case in exactly the same way.

Diagnosis of PCOS

Pelvic Examination
A doctor visually and manually examines the reproductive organs to identify masses, growths or other abnormalities.
Blood Tests
Blood testing can be used to evaluate hormone levels and help exclude other possible causes of menstrual abnormalities or androgen excess. Additional testing may evaluate glucose tolerance and fasting cholesterol and triglyceride levels.
Ultrasound
An ultrasound can be used to assess the appearance of the ovaries and the thickness of the uterine lining. A transducer uses sound waves to produce images that can be viewed on a computer screen.

Ayurvedic Treatment Approach

PCOS management in Ayurveda focuses on addressing individualized imbalances and supporting overall metabolic and reproductive wellness.

Ayurvedic herbs and formulations may be selected according to the individual's condition and assessment. Treatment may also consider factors such as digestion, inflammation, weight management, insulin sensitivity and emotional well-being.

Diet and lifestyle management are important components of the overall approach. The treatment plan is generally personalized according to the individual's health status and requirements.
